Eugene Evans, 64, a retired teacher from Encinal High School in Alameda, California and the Scoutmaster and Skipper of the S.S.S. Farallon, owned by Berkeley Sea Scouts has been arrested on six felony counts of sexual assault against boys between 13 and 17 years old.

Evans is being held on $1 million bail.

Police believe that Evans was responsible for numerous sexual assaults on boys and over a number of years. Allegations against Evans include lewd and lascivious acts against a minor under 14 years of age, oral copulation with a minor under 16 years of age and penetration with a foreign object of a minor under 14 years of age.

A Berkeley Police spokesperson said, “they have yet to determine definitively how long Evans may have been molesting youths”.

Police also say there may be more victims who have not stepped forward and police are asking anyone with information in the case or anyone who may know additional victims to call the police department’s Youth Services Detail at (510) 981-5715.

Eugene Evans sued Berkeley after the city revoked free berthing privileges because the group’s parent organization, the Boy Scouts, bar atheist and gay members. Evans appealed to the California Supreme Court and lost. Pacific Legal Foundation took his case all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court which let stand the state supreme court ruling that upheld Berkeley’s decision to deny free slips. During the fight, Evans a was hero of the political right receiving the attention of conservative columnist James J. Kirkpatrick who profiled Evans.
