Cops Go and Go Fast
Early last Sunday morning, Pinellas County, Florida Deputy Sgt. John Daniels was working radar on the highway in a 45 mph zone when a 2007 Dodge Charger went charging by at about 100 mph.
Reportedly Sgt. Daniels falls in behind the speeder and sees the speeding car pass vehicles in a no-passing zone.
Eventually Sgt. Daniels catches up to the car where it had pulled over and stopped in a turn lane. As Sgt. Daniels approaches the car he notices that the male passenger has exited the car and is urinating in the roadway in full view of passing vehicles. The guy peeing in the road looks at Sgt. Daniels and goes back to taking care of business.
Doing as any normal cop would do Daniels sets out to get to the bottom of this, getting the driver out of the car and asking him why he is speeding to which the driver can provide no answer.
Sgt. Daniels allegedly detects the smell of alcohol on the breath of the driver and asks if the man has been drinking. Reportedly the driver indicated that he had one or two drinks.
Sgt. Daniels then tells the driver that he wants to give him a breath test and that if the driver fails, someone would have to be called to give him a ride. The driver indicates he does not wish to take the breath test and wants to call someone to drive the two men home.
The driver is permitted to call someone for a ride, while Sgt. Daniels waits. When the the new driver shows up, Daniels insures that the new driver has not been drinking and then sends the three on their way.
Yes, Sgt. Daniels is a remarkable easy going sorta’ guy apparently as he could have arrested the driver for felony speeding – 55 mph above the speed limit, passing in a no passing zone and DUI and of course he could have arrested the “peeing guy” for public urination and possibly indecent exposure which in some jurisdictions requires registration as a sex offender if convicted.
Of course, you, I or most of the folks we know should not expect this sort of easy treatment from Sgt. Daniels or any other cop were we to be stopped under similar circumstances.
You see the driver of the Charger was none other than Pasco County Deputy Jose Berrios, 25.
And the guy washing down the roadway with urine was none other than Pasco County Deputy Kent Hentschel, 24.
What is really weird about the whole thing is that Sgt. Daniels actually wrote up a report of the entire incident and turned it in, much to the embarrassment of two sheriffs and the anger of a whole lotta’ civilians.
We don’t know what the penalty is for breaking the “thin blue line” in Florida, but needless to say Sgt. Daniels better keep a real close eye on his donuts and coffee from now on.
